DESCRIPTION:How do we support Long-Term Careers? \nJoin this ICES workshop to understand how companies and organizations could benefit from the new trends. \nThe pandemic has changed how students\, as well as professionals\, can access\nuniversity education worldwide. Top universities across the world are available on\neveryone’s computer. DESCRIPTION:On June 23\, ICES will have a webinar about Cyber Security and ISO21434/27001. Cybersecurity is high on most company agendas but often combined with a feeling of helplessness due to the inherent complexity of the area. A reassurance to those concerned is that Cybersecurity is an old field of study\, Information Security\, applied to a new technological biome.\nTo support us in regaining a sense of Security there are several Standards to choose from. Within the field of IT\, ISO 27001 has gained such acceptance that it is taking its natural place next to the established ISO 9001 and 14001. In its design and application\, it follows the same layout and practical steps that ISO 9001 for Quality Control has applied for many decades.\n\nOne industry that for a long time was spared from Cybersecurity was the Automotive industry. Among the wreckage left behind the innovative tornado Elon Musk\, an initiative is being introduced that will make sure that Cybersecurity isn’t forgotten during the development process: ISO 21434. To speed up the industry transition\, the ISO standard has been flagged as a regulatory requirement for type certification of vehicles according to UNECE WP29\, for newly introduced vehicles from 2022!\n\nDuring this webinar\, we will quickly pass through the background to Cybersecurity in Information Security\, which aspects of Information we’re protecting\, and what practical methods are available. You can register for the event below\, in order to get the zoom link before the event starts. \n  \nLink here: https://kth-se.zoom.us/j/68472870259  \n  \nAbstract: \n  \nIn te current digital technological revolution—i.e.\, the “connected world” enabled by wireless Internet of Things (IoT) — IoT systems play a major role in generating data. Hence\, it is natural to use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in IoT to achieve the same success as in robotics\, computer vision\, speech\, and text analysis. For example\, in smart cities monitored by the wireless IoT\, AI could greatly minimize vehicular energy consumption\, reduce noise and environmental pollution\, minimize accidents\, and monitor drinking water with considerable health and production savings. In Industry 4.0\, wireless IoT and AI are expected to improve production efficiency by order of magnitudes. More in general\, AI can be used to operate wireless IoT networks\, whereas wireless links could gather data or implement AI procedures distributively. However\, to achieve all of this\, we would need the luxury of abundant\, clean\, timely\, and centrally collected data where automatic applications or network management decisions have to be taken; and adequate computational resources across most of the IoT network units. Is this realistic? \nUnfortunately\, the answer is no. In wireless IoT\, data sets of any size and quality will be produced by distributed units (often embedded units)\, which may not be able to perform state-of-the-art AI computations and may not be able to share data over communication networks due to energy\, computational and bandwidth limitations of the wireless communication channels and protocols\, or even security and privacy concerns. \nIn fact\, existing AI methods somehow applicable to wireless IoT are mostly intended for proprietary\, high performing networks of processors (e.g.\, in data centers). They would greatly stress public wireless networks\, particularly for dynamic retraining and inference. In short\, AI in wireless communications suffers from a lack of fundamental theoretical understanding\, which is exacerbated by the poor performance of existing AI when deployed in wireless IoT systems. Moreover\, the successful application of AI in wireless IoT requires vast domain knowledge within information and communication theory. Hence\, the mere use of state-of-the-art AI solutions borrowed from the fields of robotic\, computer vision\, or speech and text analysis will lead to inefficient implementations with mediocre performance unless we fundamentally advance AI for wireless IoT. \nIn this seminar\, we highlight the need of establishing a new fundamental theory for machine learning over wireless IoT networks. We give an overview of the state-of-the-art and some of our recent developments. \n  \nBio \nDr. Carlo Fischione is full Professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology\, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science\, Division of Network and Systems Engineering\, Stockholm\, Sweden. He is Director of the KTH-Ericsson Data Science Micro Degree Program directed to Ericsson globally\, and global Chair of the IEEE Machine Learning for Communications Emerging Technologies Initiative. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Information Engineering (3/3 years) in May 2005 and the Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering (Laurea\, Summa cum Laude\, 5/5 years) in April 2001\, both from University of L’Aquila\, Italy\, \nHe has held research positions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Cambridge\, MA (2015\, Visiting Professor); Harvard University\, Cambridge\, MA (2015\, Associate); and University of California at Berkeley\, CA (2004-2005\, Visiting Scholar\, and 2007-2008\, Research Associate). He is Honorary Professor at University of L’Aquila\, Italy\, Department of Mathematics\, Information Engineering\, and Computer Science. \nHis research interests include applied optimization\, wireless\, sensor networks\, Internet of things\, and machine learning. He has co-authored over 200 publications\, including a book\, book chapters\, international journals and conferences\, and international patents. He received a number of awards\, such as the “IEEE Communication Society S. O. Rice” award for the best IEEE Transactions on Communications paper of 2018\, the best paper award of IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (2007)\, the best paper awards at the IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor System 05 and 09 (IEEE MASS 2005 and IEEE MASS 2009)\, the Best Paper Award of the IEEE Sweden VT-COM-IT Chapter (2014)\, the Best Business Idea awards from VentureCup East Sweden (2010) and from Stockholm Innovation and Growth (STING) Life Science in Sweden (2014)\, the “Ferdinando Filauro” award from University of L’Aquila\, Italy (2003)\, the “Higher Education” award from Abruzzo Region Government\, Italy (2004)\, the Junior Research award from Swedish Research Council (2007)\, and the “Silver Ear of Wheat” award in history from the Municipality of Tornimparte\, Italy (2012). \nHe is Editor of IEEE Transactions on Communications (Machine Learning for Communications area) and IEEE Journal on Selected Areas on Communications (Series on Machine Learning for Communication and Networking)\, and has been serving as Associated Editor of IFAC Automatica (2014-2019). Meanwhile\, he also has offered his advice as a consultant to numerous technology companies such as ABB Corporate Research\, Berkeley Wireless Sensor Network Lab\, Ericsson Research\, Synopsys\, and United Technology Research Center. He is co-founder and scientific advisor of ELK.Audio. He is Member of IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers)\, and Ordinary Member of DASP (the Italian academy of history Deputazione Abruzzese di Storia Patria).

SUMMARY:Virtual Coffee with an Expert – Industrial systems autonomy enabled by Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Alf Isaksson\, ABB AB \nDate and time: November 11\, 15:00-16:30 \nAbstract: In recent years there has been much media attention on advances in self-driving cars. For autonomous driving there are already established standards with levels from 0 to 5 describing the steps from completely manual operation to fully autonomous driving. Autonomous systems is\, however\, making much progress also in many other applications. Some of them\, such as autonomous docking of ships\, autonomous industrial robots or autonomous mining vehicles\, will most likely reach higher levels of autonomy before we see self-driving cars widely used among the general public. \nThis talk will discuss industrial autonomous systems with a particular focus on one of the main enabling technologies\, viz. the progress in artificial intelligence for industrial applications. We will argue that Industrial AI requires a combination of domain knowledge and data science. In order for an autonomous system to be able to handle unanticipated\, or at least highly unusual\, events machine learning on observed data only will not be sufficient. Therefore\, a hybrid approach combining physical modeling and machine learning will be required. \nBio: Alf Isaksson received an MSc in Computer Engineering and a Ph.D. in Automatic Control\, in 1983 and 1988 respectively\, both from Linköping University\, Sweden. After graduating he stayed at Linköping University until 1991 as an Assistant Professor. From 1991 to 1992 he spent one year as a Research Associate at The University of Newcastle\, Australia. Returning to Sweden in 1992 Isaksson moved to the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm\, where eventually in 1999 he was promoted to full Professor. \nIn 2001 he made the shift from academic to industrial research and joined ABB Corporate Research in Västerås\, Sweden. After a specialist career culminating in an appointment to Corporate Research Fellow in 2009\, he from 2012 – July 2020 had multiple positions responsible for managing research inside ABB. For example from 2014-2019 he was funding and coordinating all Control research globally in ABB. DESCRIPTION:*** Please Note: The event has moved to a new venue. Room M3\, Brinellvägen 64 *** \nEdward A. Lee\, Professor of the Graduate School and Robert S. Pepper Distinguished Professor Emeritus in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UC Berkeley\, will join us for an Inspirational talk. Professor Lee’s research group studies cyber-physical systems\, which integrate physical dynamics with software and networks. His focus is on the use of deterministic models as a central part of the engineering toolkit for such systems. He has led the development of several influential open-source software packages\, notably Ptolemy and its various spinoffs. \n\nAbout the talk \nUsing Time and Timestamps for Deterministic Distributed Software\nConcurrent and distributed software based on publish-and-subscribe\, actors\, and service-oriented architectures are sometimes used to realize distributed cyber-physical systems. Broadly\, these mechanisms compose software components that have private state and communicate with each other via message passing and/or remote procedure calls. However\, the underlying mechanisms are less deterministic than they could be\, and for some cyber-physical systems\, the resulting unpredictability is debilitating. In this talk\, I described some simple challenge problems that are common in distributed cyber-physical systems and extremely difficult to solve using any of these methods. I  offer an alternative model of computation that we call “reactors” that solves these problems simply and elegantly and that is able to leverage decades of results from the real-time systems community. The reactors model is being implemented in a coordination language called Lingua Franca\, which extends messages with logical timestamps that provide a semantic ordering. By leveraging synchronized clocks\, an efficient distributed implementation guarantees determinacy when network latencies and clock synchronization error remain below assumed bounds. \n  \nBook your seat below! \n  \nConference Room: M3\, Brinellvägen 83 \n

Designing and verifying AV’s requires an effective integration of multiple models and tools. Jose will cover the modular AD-EYE platform which integrates open source software and commercial tools to support architecture and algorithm design and verification for AV’s. Current developments include for example a methodology for elicitation of critical scenarios\, fault-injection  and test automation\, and deployment of the same control software on the KTH research concept vehicle (for which type approval is currently applied for). We will also cover related roadmaps within AI and Fog Computing. We will start off with a nice dinner on Wednesday the 27th. The topics for the workshop will cover trends and roadmaps within IIoT\, AI and Fog Computing  combined with funding opportunities and EC frameworks and initiatives. \n\n\n\nMartin Törngren and Paul Pop will facilitate the workshop with support from our keynote speaker Haydn Thomson. Haydn will\, based on his experience and insights when it comes to ongoing and future initiatives\, give an overview of the existing and upcoming industry and EC frameworks. The purpose of the workshop is to develop a synthesis of the presented roadmaps based on the views of the participants. Haydn Thomson is an entrepreneur as well as an adjunct Prof. and is working closely with the EC.
